Amazon FBA Compliance Guides

Amazon asked for a safety data sheet, placed an ASIN in dangerous-goods review, or rejected the document you uploaded? Start with the exact FBA notice. This hub routes you to the smallest defensible fix before you pay for a new SDS.

An Amazon FBA document request is a marketplace classification workflow. It is not automatically an OSHA finding, a transport-law decision, or proof that your product needs a newly authored SDS. Check the product, your business role, the existing supplier document, and the wording of Amazon’s request separately.

Start with the exact FBA problem

A free-first diagnosis before you buy anything

  1. Save the complete notice. Record the ASIN, current classification status, requested document type, and any stated mismatch or rejection reason.
  2. Confirm the product identity. Compare the listing name, brand, formulation, package and battery attributes with the document you plan to submit.
  3. Check your role. A reseller may be able to obtain the manufacturer’s current SDS. A manufacturer or covered importer may have different duties. Marketplace status alone does not decide the OSHA role.
  4. Check the document, not only its age. Amazon’s current SDS declaration materials apply platform-specific submission criteria, including a five-year recency rule. OSHA does not create a universal calendar expiration date for SDSs.
  5. Fix the narrow problem. Correct listing data where the listing is wrong; obtain the correct supplier document where one exists; commission authoring only when no suitable SDS exists and the responsibility is yours.

Use an existing SDS or create a new one?

Free diagnostic: Use the free SDS rejection checklist to check file mechanics, product match, completeness, and listing consistency before resubmitting or paying for authoring.

Start with the manufacturer route when the product and formulation are unchanged and a current, usable sheet exists. Read Manufacturer SDS vs. Authored SDS to compare the two paths. A product name or code difference can matter when it prevents reliable cross-reference between the listing and the SDS, but a marketplace rejection is not permission to rewrite a supplier’s document.

If the concern is the revision date, use SDS Validity, Expiration and Updates. Under the U.S. Hazard Communication Standard, updates are tied to significant new hazard or protective information—not a universal annual or five-year legal expiration cycle. Amazon can still apply a separate platform recency rule to documents submitted for its workflow.

Amazon policy, OSHA law, and transport rules are different layers

Amazon decides what evidence it requests and whether an ASIN can use FBA. OSHA governs workplace hazard communication for covered chemicals and regulated roles. Transport authorities govern shipment classification and handling. One layer can inform another, but Amazon’s classification or rejection does not itself determine legal status under the other systems.

For a cross-platform view, read Marketplace SDS Requirements by Platform. It helps distinguish a marketplace upload request from the underlying legal document duty.

What to have ready for the FBA review

  • The exact ASIN and the full Amazon notice, including any rejection text.
  • The product detail page name, brand, package configuration and relevant battery or chemical attributes.
  • The unedited manufacturer SDS or the correct Amazon exemption document, where applicable.
  • A clear explanation of any legitimate name or brand difference between the listing and the manufacturer document.
  • The date and source of the document, plus confirmation that the product and formulation still match.

Keep the original files and a record of what changed between submissions. Do not invent transport data, replace the responsible party, alter hazard statements, or relabel a supplier SDS just to make the names look identical. If Amazon’s notice and the document appear inconsistent, diagnose the mismatch before submitting the same file again.

When outside help is justified

Consider a specialist only after you have confirmed that a suitable manufacturer document is unavailable, the product or formulation genuinely requires new work, or the existing SDS needs a correction that the responsible party can authorize. Compare deliverables, revision policy, jurisdictions, inputs and accountability—not only headline price.
