TikTok Shop SDS Rejection Checklist

Use this TikTok Shop SDS rejection checklist when Seller Center asks for a Safety Data Sheet – or rejects the one you uploaded. That does not automatically mean you need to buy a new SDS.

Start by identifying the exact request, checking the file, and confirming that the document matches the product you actually sell. This free checklist turns the rejection into a step-by-step diagnosis so you can choose the lowest-cost defensible next step.

Run this 60-second screen first

Before you edit anything or pay an authoring service, confirm all six items:

  • You read the exact rejection message or document request in Seller Center.
  • The file is a searchable PDF, not an image-only scan.
  • The SDS is in English for the US listing.
  • It has a preparation or revision date and all 16 numbered section headings.
  • The product name, formula, SKU, packaging, label, and responsible party match the listing.
  • The hazard and transport information agree with the label, listing attributes, and shipping documents.

If any answer is no or not sure, the rejection may be diagnosable without commissioning a completely new SDS.

The five problems this checklist helps you separate

1. The wrong document was submitted

TikTok may request an SDS, UN38.3 report, or another product document depending on the product and submission flow. Start with the exact prompt shown for the exact SKU. For lithium battery products, obtain the UN38.3 report and follow Seller Center if an SDS is also requested.

2. The file failed a basic submission check

Common fixable problems include an image-only PDF, unclear filename, wrong language, missing preparation or revision date, fewer than 16 sections, or incomplete product attributes in the listing.

Do not rewrite technical classifications to fix a file-format problem. Ask the responsible manufacturer or supplier for a current searchable copy when possible.

3. The SDS does not match the exact product

A generic document or an SDS for a similar product is not a safe substitute. Check the formulation, concentration, fragrance or color variant, private-label version, SKU, packaging, manufacturer or supplier, and intended use. Changing only the product name does not cure an identity mismatch.

4. Important SDS information is missing or inconsistent

Pay particular attention to:

  • Section 1: product identifier, responsible party, address, phone, emergency contact, and intended use.
  • Section 2: classification, signal word, pictograms, hazard statements, and precautionary statements.
  • Section 3: hazardous ingredients, CAS numbers, and concentration ranges where required, including valid treatment of trade-secret information.
  • Section 14: transport information when the product has a transport classification.
  • Section 16: preparation or last-revision date.

TikTok expects a 16-section SDS. Under the US OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, the 16 headings appear in sequence, but OSHA does not enforce the content of Sections 12 through 15. Do not present complete Sections 12 through 15 as a universal OSHA enforcement requirement.

5. The SDS conflicts with the listing, label, or transport record

The SDS should not be reviewed in isolation. Compare its classification and transport data with the product label, listing attributes, battery details, flammability or aerosol fields, packaging, and fulfillment records.

If the source documents disagree, stop and resolve the underlying product data. Do not edit the SDS only to make the platform accept it.

Choose the next step from evidence, not panic

  1. Use the existing SDS after the file, identity, and consistency checks pass.
  2. Request the current SDS from the manufacturer or supplier when the exact document exists but you do not have the correct copy.
  3. Request a correction from the responsible party or a qualified author when an exact SDS has a supported omission or contradiction.
  4. Commission qualified authoring or testing only when no defensible exact-product SDS or scientific basis exists.
  5. Obtain UN38.3 for a lithium battery product and follow the exact Seller Center prompt for any additional SDS request.

If an already-listed product is later identified by TikTok Shop as a dangerous good, TikTok currently states that sellers receive a 90-day grace period to submit the required SDS. Frequently asked questions

Can I use an SDS for a similar product?

No. TikTok’s current US guidance says the SDS must match the exact formulation, SKU, packaging, listing, and label. TikTok Shop US – Guide to Obtaining a Safety Data Sheet. Request the exact document from the manufacturer or supplier.

Does TikTok require an SDS even if the product is not hazmat for shipping?

It may. TikTok says it can require an SDS for products containing harmful or potentially hazardous chemicals even when special hazmat shipping labels are not required.

Does an SDS expire after a fixed number of years?

The reviewed TikTok and OSHA sources do not establish a universal three-year or five-year expiration rule. Check the preparation or revision date, product or formula changes, new hazard information, and whether the manufacturer has a more current exact-product version.

Should I edit the SDS myself?

Do not change technical classifications without the necessary product evidence and expertise. Start with the manufacturer or supplier. If the exact product lacks a defensible SDS, use a qualified authoring service or laboratory as appropriate.

What about mixtures under the updated OSHA HCS?

As of August 23, 2026, the transition deadline for substances has passed. The remaining transition applies to mixtures through November 19, 2027. Classification-sensitive changes should be reviewed by a qualified party.
