TikTok Shop US: SDS Required or Rejected

Scope: TikTok Shop United States. Reviewed 2026-08-23. XrdaGrid publishes general information, not legal advice.

An “SDS required” notice and a rejected SDS are two different TikTok Shop US problems.

TikTok Shop US asks for a Safety Data Sheet when a product contains harmful or potentially hazardous chemicals — and it asks even when the product does not require hazardous-materials shipping labels. If the document is missing when required, the platform may block or suppress the listing until the correct file is uploaded. If a document was uploaded and refused, use the checks below to identify the failure; several file and administrative defects can be corrected without buying anything.

This page separates the two situations, explains what the platform checks, and orders the remedies from free to paid.

SDS required or rejected: two different problems

Required (nothing uploaded yet). TikTok identified the product as containing hazardous or potentially hazardous chemicals, or the Dangerous Goods flow was triggered during listing. When a new product is created, the platform may flag it as a potential dangerous good and require a Product Compliance questionnaire plus documentation — an SDS, or a UN38.3 lithium battery test summary — before publishing. Editing an existing dangerous-goods product re-triggers that declaration process.

Rejected (a document was refused). The file reached review and failed a specific check: format, identity match, missing content, or a conflict with your label, transport documents, or listing attributes.

One narrow exception worth knowing. If a product was already listed and TikTok later identifies it as a Dangerous Good, sellers are given a 90-day grace period to submit the required SDS through Seller Center. This applies only to that situation — an already-live listing reclassified after the fact. It does not extend to a new blocked listing or to a document that has been rejected. Why TikTok asks when shipping rules do not

A marketplace policy and a legal obligation are not the same thing, and confusing them wastes time.

TikTok Shop's requirement is a platform rule. The guide states plainly that an SDS may be required even when the product is not regulated as dangerous goods for shipping — the platform uses the document to confirm what the product is. Where no SDS is provided, the platform stays cautious and restricts the listing.

Separately, the U.S. Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) governs hazard communication for hazardous chemicals in workplace contexts, and it defines the 16-section structure the platform expects. Its scope includes conditions and exclusions — including a consumer-product exclusion that depends on the product's labeling and on the nature of workplace use and exposure, rather than a blanket carve-out. The practical takeaway: satisfying TikTok is not proof of legal compliance, and being a retail product does not automatically remove every obligation. For product-specific questions, use a qualified party. OSHA — 29 CFR 1910.1200

One further note for context: OSHA's 2024 update to the HCS is still in a phased transition, with separate deadlines by actor and material type. For this page, the practical instruction remains to upload the current exact-product document requested by Seller Center. Requirements differ by marketplace — see marketplace SDS requirements for how platforms diverge.

What the platform actually checks

TikTok Shop US accepts documents in the Globally Harmonized System format only. Documents with fewer than 16 sections may be rejected. TikTok Shop US — Guide to Obtaining a Safety Data Sheet Beyond the section count, the checks that matter most:

  • Exact product match. The document must correspond to the specific formulation, SKU, packaging, listing, and product label. Generic documents, self-made documents, and a similar product's SDS are not accepted. TikTok SDS Guide
  • Section 1. Product identification, responsible party and contact details, an emergency phone number, and intended use.
  • Section 2. Classification with consistent signal word, pictograms, and hazard and precautionary statements.
  • Section 3. Required hazardous ingredients with CAS numbers and concentration ranges. Proprietary blends may still use lawful trade-secret handling, but required hazard information must remain disclosed. TikTok SDS Guide
  • Section 14. Transport data that agrees with your listing's hazmat attributes.
  • The file itself. A searchable PDF, in the official market language, with a clear filename and a preparation or revision date.

The six reasons submissions fail

A. Required document never supplied. The platform requested an SDS and none was uploaded, so the listing is blocked or suppressed.

B. File or submission defect. Image-only PDF that cannot be searched, unclear filename, wrong market language, missing preparation or revision date, fewer than 16 numbered sections, or incomplete listing fields. These are administrative rather than technical changes.

C. Identity mismatch. The document belongs to a different formulation, concentration, scent or color variant, SKU, packaging configuration, or responsible party — or it is a "similar" product's sheet. Renaming a generic document is not a fix, and the platform explicitly does not accept self-made or reused documents.

D. Content omission. Missing responsible-party or emergency contact data, absent classification or label elements, missing CAS numbers or concentration ranges where required, blank fields where an accurate "no applicable information" statement belongs, or an incomplete Section 14 for a product with transport classification.

E. Cross-document conflict. The SDS disagrees with the product label, with transport or fulfillment records, or with listing attributes such as battery presence, flammability, or aerosol volume.

F. Stale or unsupported basis. The formula changed after the document was prepared, or nobody can validate the document against underlying formulation or laboratory evidence. Neither TikTok nor OSHA publishes a universal "expires after N years" rule — what matters is whether the document still describes the current product.

If you want to work through these in order against your own rejection message, the SDS rejection checklist walks the same taxonomy step by step.

Free fixes, in the order to try them

1. Get the exact current document from the manufacturer or supplier

This resolves identity and content problems at the source before you pay for authoring. Ask specifically for the current SDS for your exact formulation, SKU, and packaging — not a family document or a close variant. If you are a reseller, the responsible party for the product you are actually selling is the correct source.

Before resubmitting, check the document against the platform's file and identity requirements above. Do I need a new SDS? covers the judgment call between reusing, correcting, and commissioning a document.

2. Fix the administrative and file problems yourself

If the technical content is correct but the file is not, correct the administrative defect: request a searchable PDF export rather than a scan, use the market language version, confirm the preparation or revision date is present, give the file a clear name, and complete the listing's required product attributes.

What not to do: alter technical content — classifications, hazard statements, ingredient data — to make a document pass review. Editing an SDS until the platform accepts it is not a remedy and creates a conflict with your label and transport documents. How to fix a rejected SDS sets out which corrections are safe to make and which are not.

3. Have the responsible party correct it

Where the underlying product evidence is valid but the document has genuine omissions or contradictions, the manufacturer, importer, or responsible party should correct it using that evidence. This is a correction request, not a new document; do not commission a replacement until the responsible party confirms that correction is not defensible.

When authoring is genuinely the answer

Two situations remain after the free routes are exhausted:

Only a generic or similar-product document exists. You requested the exact document, and the manufacturer cannot produce one for your specific product. Submitting the generic sheet is not an option.

You are the manufacturer or importer, and no defensible document exists. TikTok's guide states the document should be issued by the manufacturer or a qualified authoring service, and that whoever prepares it needs the underlying laboratory data and expertise. If your formulation has never been documented, authoring — and testing where the data does not exist — is the real path, not a formatting exercise.

Products containing lithium batteries

Lithium battery products require a UN38.3 test summary. Whether an SDS is also required depends on the flow: TikTok's own pages are not consistent on this point — some describe the test summary as an alternative to an SDS, others describe it as an additional document for dangerous goods. TikTok battery-listing guide · TikTok Dangerous Goods Requirements

Given that inconsistency, the safe course is: obtain the UN38.3 test summary, then follow the exact document prompt shown in your Seller Center compliance questionnaire for that specific product, and upload an SDS as well when it is requested. Do not assume that a UN38.3 report removes the SDS requirement in every case.

Before you resubmit

Assemble the evidence rather than uploading and hoping:

  • The exact rejection message or document request from Seller Center
  • The listing URL and SKU
  • Photographs of the product label, front and back
  • The formulation or specification sheet
  • The current SDS for the exact product
  • Transport documents, and the UN38.3 test summary for battery products

Then confirm the document, the label, the transport paperwork, and the listing attributes all describe the same product. Consistency across those four is what the review is checking.

Questions sellers ask

Does TikTok require an SDS even if my product ships as a normal parcel?

It can. The requirement is triggered by the presence of harmful or potentially hazardous chemicals, and the platform states an SDS may be required even when the product is not regulated as dangerous goods for shipping.

Can I write the SDS myself?

Do not create or alter a document merely to make it pass TikTok. TikTok says the SDS should come from the manufacturer or a qualified authoring service and be prepared from the underlying product data. A business that is itself responsible for authoring still needs the necessary evidence and expertise; otherwise use a qualified party.

My SDS is from 2019. Is it too old?

There is no published age limit at which a document automatically becomes invalid. What matters is whether it describes your current product and formulation, and whether the responsible party can confirm it is current.

Does approval by TikTok mean my product is compliant?

No. Platform acceptance is a marketplace decision. It does not establish compliance with OSHA, transport rules, or any other legal requirement.

My listing was live for months and now TikTok wants an SDS. Is it coming down immediately?
